"The vision of the Massage In Schools Programme is that every child attending school experience positive and nurturing touch every day"
"The mission of the Massage In Schools Programme is to provide high quality and professional training to all teachers and caring adults willing to bring nurturing touch into schools"
MISP is for children aged 4-12, it is a peer massage performed sitting down and fully clothed. The teachers or instructors do not touch the children. After gaining parental permission, the massage routine is introduced gradually to the children. The strokes have familiar names and are performed in a sequence to help memory and concentration. Areas covered are the head, neck, shoulders, arms, hands and back.
Respect is crucial when working with MISP, the principle of respect is expressed at many levels: The children must always ask each other's permission and say thankyou when finished. Each child has the right to say no to a massage. Children are encouraged to express their preferences regarding the stokes and ask their partner if they are comfortable and happy with the massage.
MISP has many benefits for the child such as improving concentration, co-ordination and memory. It creates a better atmosphere in which to learn and builds trust and friendships. It also boosts confidence and reponsibility in learning a new skill. This will make the classroom a calmer place to work, fits in well with Health Promoting Schools and can be introduced to each class as part of the curriculum.
